The terms sinks and basins are being used interchangeably these days considering the level of similarity in their composition, style, and the functions these two fixtures perform. However, since they are two separate terms, it shows that there ought to be some difference.

What Is A Sink?

A sink, commonly referred to as a kitchen sink is a domestic and commercial fitting that is installed in kitchens. The sink is a big bowl-like structure with a depth of around 9-10 inches, that has a drainer, also known as Kitchen sink coupling, in the centre and allows you to wash and clean utensils. These sinks are made up of various materials like granite, marble, porcelain, and stainless steel.

Sinks are available in various shapes and sizes and can be installed in domestic households for cleaning pots and pans after cooking, in garages for attaching garden pipes, washing tools, etc., and in commercial kitchens, office pantries and so on.

What Is A Basin?

A basin commonly referred to as a wash basin is usually made of ceramic and is found in households and bathrooms. Washbasins are small or medium-sized wide bowls with little depth that have a coupling/drainer in the centre and allows you to wash your hands and face. The washbasins are available in wall mount or countertop configurations.

Basins are available in beautiful shapes and designs to suit the modern-day bathroom aesthetic. These basins can be installed in bathrooms, near dining areas, Toilet areas, religious places and any other place where water for the purpose of washing hands is required.

What Is The Basic Difference Between A Sink And A Basin?

As discussed above, the basic difference between a Ruhe sink and a Ruhe wash basin lies in their area of installation or application. The sinks are mostly used in kitchens and pantries and the basins are used in toilets and washrooms. Apart from this, both the sink and the basin have similar functions and purposes. They both have a faucet or a water tap for water flow and a drainer/coupling for drainage of the wastewater.
