The Three Types of Ruhe Wash Basins
Table-Top Wash Basins
A table-top basin sits on the counter, so the whole bowl shows. The counter must be solid and level, with a hole for the waste. Because the basin raises the rim above the counter, it needs a taller tap.
- Designs: 20, from 11 to 27 inches wide
- Tap: tall body pillar tap, tall basin mixer or a wall-mounted tap
- Best for: master bathrooms and guest bathrooms with a counter
Wall-Hung Wash Basins
A wall-hung basin is fixed straight to the wall with brackets, leaving the floor below clear. That makes small bathrooms feel bigger and the floor easier to clean. The wall must be strong enough to hold the brackets. Ruhe's two corner basins fit into a corner where a regular basin won't.
- Designs: 8, including 2 corner basins; regular models 12 to 18.5 inches wide
- Tap: regular pillar tap or basin mixer
- Best for: small bathrooms, guest toilets and wash areas outside the bathroom
Undermount Wash Basins
An undermount basin is fixed under the counter, so the counter edge runs straight into the bowl with no rim on top. Water and soap can be wiped straight in. The counter has to be cut to the basin's shape, so plan it with your counter supplier.
- Designs: 2, 18 and 22 inches wide
- Tap: regular pillar tap or basin mixer
- Best for: vanities where you want an easy-to-clean, flat counter
What Size Wash Basin Should You Buy?
Measure the space before you choose. For a wall-hung basin, measure the wall width. For a table-top or undermount basin, measure the counter width and depth. Leave room on both sides for elbows and for the tap.
| Space you have | What usually fits | Ruhe examples |
|---|---|---|
| Very small: guest toilet, wash area near the dining table | Basins about 11 to 15 inches wide, or a corner basin | Hydra (12 inches, wall-hung), Blaze (11 inches, table-top), Felis (13.5 inches, wall-hung) |
| Regular bathroom | Basins about 16 to 20 inches wide | Zosma (16 inches, table-top), Norma (18 inches, table-top), Aries (18 inches, wall-hung), Iris (19 inches, table-top) |
| Large bathroom or long vanity | Basins about 21 to 27 inches wide | Oasis (22 inches, table-top), Aether (23.5 inches, table-top), Electra (25 inches, table-top), Navi (27 inches, table-top) |
Exact sizes are on each product page. Check them against your space before ordering.
Standard Wash Basin Height in India
Most adults find a basin comfortable when its rim is 800 to 850 mm (about 31.5 to 33.5 inches) above the finished floor. For a table-top basin, remember the basin itself adds height above the counter, so keep the counter lower to reach a comfortable rim height. For children or wheelchair users, 750 to 800 mm (about 29.5 to 31.5 inches) works better.
| What | Usual height |
|---|---|
| Basin rim, adult use | 800–850 mm (about 31.5–33.5 inches) from the finished floor |
| Basin rim, children or wheelchair users | 750–800 mm (about 29.5–31.5 inches) |
Which Tap Goes with Which Basin?
The tap must reach the middle of the basin and sit high enough to wash your hands comfortably.
- Table-top basins: use a tall body pillar tap, a tall basin mixer, or a wall-mounted tap above the basin.
- Wall-hung and undermount basins: use a regular pillar tap or a basin mixer.
- Pick a mixer if you have hot water at the basin, and a pillar tap if you have only cold water.
What Else You Need to Fit a Basin
- Waste coupling: the drain fitting in the basin's waste hole.
- Bottle trap: connects the waste coupling to the drain pipe and stops sewer smell coming back up.
- Angle valve and connection pipe: bring water from the wall to the tap.
- Basin brackets: needed for wall-hung basins.
